A backbencher Tory MP threatens both EU and UK with a no-deal Brexit

Last Thursday’s latest vote in the British Parliament, the Commons, revealed the real forces operating in relation to the country’s Gordian Knot, Brexit. Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May’s newest proposal for a kind of a soft Brexit deal, under the name of ‘Plan B’ was rejected last Thursday in Parliament by 303 to 258 votes. Instrumental in this latest PM’s defeat was a faction of her Tory colleagues in the legislative, numbering around one fifth of the party’s 317 lawmakers. This group chose to abstain from the vote, leaving May exposed to Labor Party’s disparagement. This was her second deafening Parliamentary defeat. Those who inflicted them both don’t care if her negotiating abilities with Brussels are in this way drastically diminished. Actually, their ultimate target is to bring her down and drive the entire continent into dire straits. Only in similar conditions they may become possible candidates for the Premiership. The latest vote in the Commons revealed who is behind the latest petty political games. A Paleolithic MP Reportedly, it’s the European Research Group (ERG) made up of Conservative backbencher MPs, under the leadership of Jacob Rees-Mogg, an upper class super-conservative politician, of a rather Paleolithic ideology, attitude and life stance. Unsurprisingly, for ERG the EU is the daemon who prevents Britain from spreading her wings and conquering the world, as being the rightful heir of an illustrious imperial past. Recently, Rees-Mogg defended the concentration camps Great Britain had put up in South Africa back in 1910. During the Boers War in South Africa, Great Britain incarcerated striking miners in those camps under cruel conditions. Actually, Britain lost that war which gave birth to what later became the independent state of South Africa. Truly, this British politician is a rare figure, but, still, he has managed to attract a few tens of like minded MPs. All of them now threaten their country and the European Union with a cataclysmic no-deal Brexit. Such a Brexiteer! Back to the latest developments, Rees-Mogg has actually replaced Boris Johnson as head of the campaign for a no-deal Brexit. He is equally indifferent to what it may really mean for the British people. In short, Rees-Mogg has invented a new version of nationalist ideology, blaming Brussels for all the British problems and more so for Britain having definitely lost its leading role in European affairs. So, last Thursday’s vote in the Commons unveiled that a round number of sixty extremely conservative Tory deputies have constituted an atypical Parliamentary group, directly related to the political schemes of this North-East Somerset representative. Obviously, Rees-Mogg is putting his political ambitions above the interests of his country. A destructive ambition In line with his personal agenda, Rees-Mogg instructed the members of the ERG group to undermine May’s Plan B for Brexit, because he unfoundedly alleged it rules out a no-deal divorce – this being the only solution he strongly supports. In reality, he aspires to become Prime Minister and, towards this end, he has created the Moggmentum group. In the face of it, this is a grass-roots movement for Britain to leave the EU without a deal and ‘be again the ruler of its own affairs’ and why not ‘rule the waves’ once more, ‘freed’ from any EU ties. Of course, all that has to be realized under the North-East Somerset deputy as Prime Minister. Clearly, then, he is unfolding a personal plan to bring down May, by creating a paralysing crisis between London and Brussels. Only in the midst of a major European crisis can the North-East Somerset representative hope that May resigns and his party, the Tories, elect him as President and Prime Minister. Not a good idea Under this political background, in Britain, mainland Europeans seem firm in their united stance not to renegotiate the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement. Donald Tusk, the President of the European Council, said “there is a special place in hell for those who advocate Brexit without having any idea about safely realizing it”.  However, Brussels wouldn’t act as an accomplice to Rees-Mogg, in pulling down PM Theresa May. This could happen if the EU maintains a hard solid stance vis-à-vis May’s desperate efforts to put together a Brexit Agreement which the Commons could vote for. Unfortunately, everybody agrees that the UK legislators are so fragmented and lost in petty politics that this is rather impossible. Then, according to the latest information from the European Commission, the EU is quite positively disposed, if Britain asks for a deferral of the Brexit date well beyond the 29 March deadline.  Understandably, the EU leadership will do what they can not to serve Rees-Mogg’s plans to put down May, take Britain out from the EU without a deal and start a Trump-like regime just on the very other side of the English Channel.
