Every day more than 2 billion cups of coffee are consumed across the globe. Most of the coffee grounds used to make those cups are thrown away, with six million tonnes sent to landfill every year.

Thank you for sharing these creative ideas! It’s inspiring. I’m a coffee drinker and I hated throwing away my used grounds. I’m in Japan, and recycling grounds here is not something that most people have even considered. I started a volunteer project, mame-eco.org, basically just me and my wife now, we collect used grounds from cafes and give them to farmers. We hope to get more and more farmers interested, as using grounds as compost really is a great, lo-tech way to use them in significant quantities and save space in landfills and incinerators!!
Since 2004 our company has been involved in energy saving, recycling and new product development, we have participated in over 100 conferences on environment and sustainable development, our team of associates are mechanical engineers, physicists and environmental engineers.
Since 2011 we have been developing and implementing an innovative tree-planting system that aims to save water.
Since 2014, 80% of the system materials come from reusable materials, and in 2019 the system has been named G.A.T.E. from our company nitials and we went on to patent certification and industrial property registration, G.A.T.E. is considered part of good practices within the European Union and the UN sustainable development goals.
