The presence of women in the global health scenario is undeniable; however, their ascension has been marked by a trajectory of obstacles and achievements. Contrary to the false premise of a supposed lack of aptitude, women face historical difficulties in entering science and occupying leadership positions. Nevertheless, we are witnessing a paradigm shift driven by female empowerment and demands for equal opportunities.

Certainly, an emblematic example of this social transformation is the impact of the work of the renowned Brazilian physician Ruth Nussenzweig. Her endless dedication resulted in the development of a promising vaccine against Plasmodium falciparum, the infectious agent responsible for the deadliest and most prevalent form of malaria in Africa. Ruth’s legacy transcends her earthly life, as her research is already saving lives and offering hope in regions plagued by the disease and marked by neglect and poverty.

Although it is impossible for Ruth to fully witness the impact of her work, her name will be remembered as a symbol of female potential in science and public health. Her example is just one among many that highlight the crucial role of women in scientific development for global health. A role that is becoming increasingly prominent as barriers to access to education and opportunities for female leadership in science are loosened, barriers stemming from a history of sexism and misogyny that are present even among the most educated sectors.

In this context, it is undeniable that disparities between men and women persist on the path to success in science and global health, and it is easy to see that the path taken by both genders is not the same, and they do not face the same degrees of difficulty. However, these differences cannot obscure the brilliance of female achievements or diminish their positive impact. The case of Ruth Nussenzweig demonstrates that female empowerment is not only a driving force for change but also the ultimate representation that change is happening today and that female leadership and success in global health are already a reality, despite these disparities.

In conclusion, women’s demands for equality should be seen as mechanisms for social change and evolution, catalysts for progress, and active agents in building a more egalitarian society. Through these struggles and demands, doors are opened for the construction of distinguished careers with the potential to impact science and health, essential for the leadership of women in projects and research that benefit diverse communities and nations. Certainly, the time to recognize and value female leadership in science and global health is now, for only then can we truly reshape the world for the better.
