This article was exclusively written and published for The European Sting by Mr. Andrus Ansip, the Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of the Digital Single Market. The opinions expressed in this article belong to our distinguished writer.

Malicious cyber-activity has proliferated across the globe. It has become more brazen and sophisticated, imaginative and international.

Multi-country incidents such as Wannacry and NotPetya show that Europe is as vulnerable as anywhere.

As wake-up calls, they put a new perspective on how large-scale cyber-attacks affect us.

Fighting them requires an intense response, constant vigilance and more resources than before.

That means keeping up with technology developments and improving EU-wide coordination, as the exchange of information about risks and attacks is our best preparation.

After all, we are only as strong as our weakest link.

This is the aim of the Cybersecurity Act.

It creates a certification scheme for ICT products and services that will be technically compatible and valid across the EU.

This will be vital for the Internet of Things, where the billions of devices that underpin critical infrastructure must be reliable and trustworthy.

This strengthens the EU’s collective cyber-resilience, as well as people’s trust and confidence in the online environment – fundamental for the Digital Single Market to work properly.

At a time when cyber-attacks are on the rise, strengthening cybersecurity and trust in the digital society and economy is a top priority for the European Union.
