The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) organized a panel discussion on “Good Governance in developing modern quality infrastructure systems” during the Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade of the World Trade Organization (WTO), which is taking place from 19 to 21 June 2018.

Various agencies, institutions and country representatives including from the International Network for Quality Infrastructure (INetQI), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC), the WTO and the Borderless Alliance (BA), shared their views on how they actively promote good governance in quality infrastructure development to achieve an effective integration into global value chains. They also discussed opportunities and challenges on how to best support member countries in setting good governance foundations for a modern quality infrastructure system.

“Good governance in modern quality infrastructure systems contributes to the implementation of WTO Agreements and in particular to the Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade”, said UNIDO Director General LI Yong during his opening remarks. “The good governance of these quality infrastructure systems is crucial for an effective integration into global value chains”.

The discussion further highlighted the importance of the ISO CASCO Toolbox on Conformity Assessment Services, the usefulness of the Guiding Principles for Quality Policy formulation, and the relevance of a step-by-step approach to Quality Policy formulation, which were all prepared by UNIDO.
